We all know the story of the leaning Tower of Pisa – its remarkable architecture, rich history, and of course, its tilt. But this is not an article about the Tower of Pisa, you can read thousands of those on the internet. This is a story of some stairs from the tower – here’s what 500 years of walking up the marble stairs did to them.
Marble is not a very sturdy construction rock, and all the walking up and down has taken its toll. But there’s an even more interesting story. At one point during the restoration, the workers thought to flip the stepping stones, assuming they would be flat on the other side. However, they discovered that the exact procedure had taken place hundreds of years prior, as the wear was even worse on the other side. Go figure.
